Stories:
Flutter routine:
A typical day in my role as a Sports Trading Analyst at Flutter started with reviewing sportsbook performance across active sporting events and markets.
I would first monitor betting volumes, customer activity, and market exposure using internal trading dashboards, SQL queries, and Excel reports. One of my key responsibilities was identifying unusual betting patterns or pricing anomalies that could increase the sportsbook's risk exposure.
Throughout the day, I analysed customer wagering behaviour across different sports and markets. This included reviewing betting frequency, stake sizes, profitability trends, and sudden changes in betting activity. If I identified sharp action, unusual betting concentrations, or suspicious patterns, I would escalate these findings to the relevant trading or risk teams for further investigation.
Another important part of my role was monitoring market exposure. I regularly reviewed liability levels across key events to understand where the sportsbook had significant risk. When exposure became concentrated on a particular outcome, I supported traders by providing data and analysis that helped inform risk-management decisions.
I also maintained daily and weekly trading-risk dashboards covering metrics such as exposure, settlement performance, customer profitability, and operational KPIs. These reports helped stakeholders quickly identify issues and make informed decisions.
During major sporting events, the environment became highly fast-paced. I worked closely with trading, operations, and customer-support teams to investigate irregular betting activity, resolve settlement-related issues, and ensure markets were operating efficiently.
Overall, my role sat between customer betting activity and risk management. My focus was to help the sportsbook monitor exposure, understand customer behaviour, identify potential risks, and support profitable trading operations.

Throughout the day, I analysed customer payment patterns, financing performance, and operational metrics to identify trends, risks, and opportunities for improvement. I also built customer segmentation and profitability analyses to help stakeholders better understand portfolio performance.
Another important responsibility was automating reporting processes. I developed Python and Excel-based solutions that reduced manual reporting efforts and improved efficiency across the team.
I regularly collaborated with finance, operations, and business teams to understand reporting requirements and deliver actionable insights. This required strong attention to detail, effective communication, and the ability to translate data into business recommendations.
I also monitored data quality and reporting consistency, helping ensure that management decisions were based on reliable information.

1. Tell me about yourself:
Thank you for having me today.
My name is Chenyu Wang, and I recently graduated from Trinity College Dublin with an MSc in Business Analytics.
My background combines sports trading, risk management, and data analytics across the sports betting, cryptocurrency, and financial services industries.
Originally, I studied Materials Science and Engineering. During my undergraduate studies, I was awarded a full scholarship to study at University College Cork, where I had the opportunity to take courses in physics, chemistry, and computer science. That experience broadened my interests and introduced me to data analysis, programming, and quantitative problem-solving. It was one of the key reasons I later decided to pursue a master's degree in Business Analytics at Trinity College Dublin.
Most recently, I worked as a Sports Trading Analyst at Flutter UK & Ireland, where I monitored sportsbook activity, analysed customer betting behaviour, tracked market exposure, and supported real-time risk-management decisions across multiple sporting events.
Before that, I worked as a Crypto Lead Trader at OKX, where I managed spot and derivatives trading strategies across cryptocurrency markets. My responsibilities included monitoring market movements, managing portfolio exposure, analysing profitability, and adjusting trading strategies based on changing market conditions. Working in highly volatile markets helped me develop strong risk-management skills and the ability to make informed decisions under pressure.
Earlier in my career, I worked as a Business Analyst at BMW China Leasing. In that role, I analysed large volumes of customer and financial data using SQL, Python, and Excel, built automated reporting processes, and developed customer-behaviour and profitability analyses to support business decision-making.
Across these experiences, I have developed a strong interest in trading, risk management, and data-driven decision-making. What particularly attracts me to Penn Interactive is the opportunity to combine sports, trading, and risk management in a fast-paced environment. Given my experience in sportsbook operations, trading, and analytics, I believe this role is a natural next step in my career and an excellent fit for my skills and long-term goals.
2. Why Penn? / Why do you want to work for us?
There are three main reasons why I am interested in Penn Interactive.
First, I am genuinely interested in the sportsbook industry. Through my experience at Flutter, I gained exposure to sportsbook operations, customer betting behaviour, market exposure, and risk management. I found the combination of sports, data, and trading particularly engaging, and it is an area where I would like to continue building my career.
Second, I am attracted to the scope of this role. What stood out to me in the job description is that the Risk and Trading Team is involved in much more than traditional risk management. The role covers customer behaviour analysis, exposure management, pricing, promotions, and overall sportsbook performance. I enjoy working in environments where decisions have a direct commercial impact, and I believe this position would allow me to contribute while continuing to develop professionally.
Finally, Penn Interactive is one of the most exciting operators in North America. The company's focus on innovation, technology, and the integration of sports media with sportsbook products is particularly appealing to me. I am excited by the opportunity to work in a fast-paced environment, learn from experienced trading professionals, and contribute to a business that continues to grow and innovate in the industry.
Given my background in sportsbook operations and trading, I believe Penn Interactive would be an excellent place for me to continue developing my career.
3. Why this role?
I am interested in this role because it brings together three areas that I have particularly enjoyed throughout my previous experiences: trading, risk management, and data-driven decision-making.
At Flutter, I gained exposure to sportsbook operations, where I monitored betting activity, analysed customer behaviour, tracked market exposure, and supported risk-management decisions. I really enjoyed working in an environment where market conditions and customer activity were constantly changing, and where decisions needed to be made quickly based on data.
Before that, my experience as a Crypto Lead Trader at OKX further strengthened my interest in managing risk and making decisions in fast-moving markets. I was responsible for monitoring positions, managing exposure, and adapting strategies as market conditions evolved.
What excites me about this role is that it goes beyond traditional risk management. It combines customer behaviour analysis, exposure management, trading support, and sportsbook performance. I enjoy understanding why customers behave the way they do, identifying potential risks, and using data to support better decisions.
Given my experience in sportsbook operations, trading, and analytics, I see this role as a natural next step in my career and an opportunity to continue developing within the sports betting industry.
4. Describe a team conflict and how you resolved it
One example that comes to mind was during my time at BMW China Leasing.
We were working on a reporting improvement project that involved both the finance team and the IT team. The finance team wanted a new reporting solution to be delivered quickly because they needed better visibility into customer-payment performance. However, the IT team was concerned about data-quality issues and believed more validation work was needed before implementation.
As a result, there was some disagreement regarding priorities and timelines. The finance team wanted speed, while the IT team was focused on accuracy and risk control.
To help resolve the situation, I arranged discussions with both teams to better understand their concerns and objectives. After reviewing the requirements, I proposed a phased approach. We agreed to first focus on the most critical reporting metrics while simultaneously creating a validation process for the underlying data.
This allowed the finance team to gain access to the information they needed without compromising data quality. The project was delivered on time, reporting accuracy improved, and communication between the teams became much smoother.
From that experience, I learned that most team conflicts are not really about people disagreeing with each other personally. They are often caused by different priorities. By understanding each side's perspective and focusing on a practical solution, it is usually possible to find common ground.
5. Where do you see yourself in five years?
In the short term, my goal is to deepen my understanding of sportsbook operations, trading, and risk management. Although I already have experience in sportsbook analytics and trading environments, I believe there is still a lot to learn from experienced traders and risk professionals.
Over the next few years, I would like to take on greater responsibility, contribute to more complex risk-management and trading decisions, and continue developing both my analytical and commercial understanding of the sportsbook business.
In five years, I hope to be a well-rounded sportsbook trading and risk professional who is trusted to manage significant exposure, support key business decisions, and contribute to the long-term success of the organisation. I am particularly interested in becoming someone who combines strong analytical skills with practical trading and risk-management expertise.
6. Tell me about a time you worked in a team
One example that comes to mind was during my time as a Sports Trading Analyst at Flutter.
During a major sporting event, we noticed unusual betting activity on one of the markets. The betting volume increased significantly within a short period of time, which created concerns around potential risk exposure.
As part of the team, I was responsible for analysing the betting activity and identifying whether the pattern was driven by normal customer behaviour or something that required further investigation.
I worked closely with colleagues from the trading, operations, and customer-support teams. I analysed customer betting patterns, reviewed exposure levels, and shared my findings with the trading team. At the same time, the operations team helped monitor market activity, while customer support provided additional information regarding customer accounts and enquiries.
By working together and sharing information quickly, we were able to assess the situation, manage the risk appropriately, and ensure the market continued operating smoothly.
This experience reinforced the importance of communication and teamwork in a fast-paced environment. Everyone had different responsibilities, but by collaborating effectively and focusing on a common goal, we were able to make informed decisions and achieve a positive outcome.
7. What is your biggest weakness? - 缺点
One area I have worked on improving is that earlier in my career, I sometimes spent too much time analysing information before making a decision.
Coming from a data and analytical background, I naturally wanted to gather as much information as possible before feeling confident in a decision. While that can be useful in some situations, I realised that in fast-moving environments such as trading and sportsbook operations, waiting for perfect information is not always practical.
Through my experience at OKX and Flutter, I learned that decisions often need to be made with incomplete information and under time pressure. As a result, I have become much better at balancing thorough analysis with timely decision-making.
It is still something I continue to work on, but I believe I have made significant progress and now feel much more comfortable making informed decisions in fast-paced environments.
8. Tell me about a time you showed leadership - leadership
One example of leadership that comes to mind was during my time as a Crypto Lead Trader at OKX.
At one point, the cryptocurrency market experienced a period of significant volatility, with rapid price movements creating uncertainty across several positions. While everyone was focused on managing their own trades, there was no clear overview of the team's overall exposure and risk levels.
I took the initiative to consolidate key risk metrics, including position exposure, unrealised P&L, and portfolio concentration, into a structured monitoring framework. I shared this information with other traders and encouraged more frequent communication regarding market developments and risk exposure.
By improving visibility across positions and helping the team focus on the most critical risks, we were able to respond more effectively to market movements and maintain disciplined risk management during a challenging period.
What I learned from this experience is that leadership is not necessarily about having a formal title. It is about taking responsibility, helping others make better decisions, and contributing to a positive outcome for the team.
9. Tell me about a difficult problem you solved -
One difficult problem I faced during my time at Flutter involved a sudden increase in betting activity on a particular sporting event.
While monitoring sportsbook activity, I noticed that a large proportion of bets were being placed on the same outcome within a relatively short period of time. This created a significant concentration of exposure and increased the sportsbook's potential liability if that outcome occurred.
My responsibility was to determine whether this was normal customer behaviour, a reaction to new information in the market, or potentially sharp betting activity that required further attention.
I analysed betting volumes, customer activity, stake sizes, and exposure levels using internal dashboards and reporting tools. After reviewing the data, I identified that the exposure was increasing much faster than usual and highlighted the issue to the relevant trading and risk teams.
Working together, we reviewed the situation, assessed the potential impact, and implemented appropriate risk-management measures. As a result, the team was able to better manage the exposure and reduce the potential risk to the sportsbook.
This experience taught me the importance of staying calm under pressure, analysing data quickly, and communicating findings clearly when dealing with time-sensitive risk events.
10. Tell me about a failure or setback -

This experience taught me the importance of staying calm under pressure, analysing data quickly, and communicating findings clearly when dealing with time-sensitive risk events.
11. Tell me about a time you worked under pressure - 压力
One example that stands out was during my time as a Crypto Lead Trader at OKX.
There was a period of significant market volatility when cryptocurrency prices experienced sharp declines within a very short timeframe. Market sentiment changed rapidly, liquidity became thinner, and price movements were much larger than normal.
At the time, I was responsible for monitoring positions, managing exposure, and ensuring that risk remained within acceptable limits. The challenge was that market conditions were changing in real time, and decisions needed to be made quickly with incomplete information.
To manage the situation, I focused on the most critical risk indicators, including position exposure, unrealised P&L, liquidity conditions, and overall portfolio concentration. I continuously monitored the market, reassessed risk levels, and adjusted positions when necessary to reduce downside exposure.
Despite the pressure and uncertainty, I remained calm, followed a structured risk-management process, and avoided making emotional decisions. As a result, I was able to keep risk under control and protect portfolio performance during a highly volatile period.
This experience taught me the importance of staying composed under pressure, prioritising key information, and making disciplined decisions in fast-moving environments.
12. Tell me about a time you used data to make a decision - 数据解决问题/AI例子
One example that comes to mind was during my time as a Sports Trading Analyst at Flutter.
While monitoring sportsbook activity, I noticed that betting volume on a particular market was increasing much faster than normal. Rather than relying on assumptions, I decided to analyse the underlying data before determining whether any action was needed.
Using internal dashboards, SQL queries, and Excel reports, I reviewed betting volumes, customer activity, stake sizes, and exposure levels. I compared the current activity against historical patterns and identified that a significant proportion of new bets were concentrated on a single outcome.
The data suggested that the sportsbook's liability was increasing rapidly and that the exposure was becoming more concentrated than usual. Based on this analysis, I escalated my findings to the relevant trading and risk teams and provided supporting data to help assess the situation.
As a result, the team was able to review the exposure, make informed risk-management decisions, and better control the potential risk associated with that market.
This experience reinforced the importance of using data rather than assumptions when making decisions, particularly in fast-paced trading environments where risk levels can change quickly.
13. Tell me about a time you managed multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment - 多任务
One example that comes to mind was during my time as a Sports Trading Analyst at Flutter during a busy sporting weekend.
There were multiple high-profile events taking place at the same time, which meant that betting activity, customer enquiries, and market exposure all increased significantly.
At one point, I was simultaneously monitoring betting activity across several markets, reviewing exposure reports, updating trading-risk dashboards, and helping investigate unusual betting patterns that had been flagged for further review.
To manage the workload effectively, I prioritised tasks based on their potential impact on risk and business operations. Time-sensitive exposure issues were addressed first, while routine reporting tasks were scheduled around periods of lower activity. I also maintained close communication with trading, operations, and customer-support teams to ensure information was shared efficiently.
By staying organised and focusing on priorities, I was able to complete all critical tasks accurately while continuing to support the team during a particularly busy period.
This experience taught me the importance of prioritisation, communication, and remaining calm when managing multiple responsibilities in a fast-paced environment.
14. What is your understanding of Sportsbook Risk? - 对Sportsbook Risk理解
My understanding of sportsbook risk is that it involves identifying, monitoring, and managing the financial risks associated with customer betting activity.
From a sportsbook perspective, the objective is not simply to accept bets, but to ensure that risk exposure remains within acceptable levels while maintaining a competitive customer experience and long-term profitability.
One of the key areas of sportsbook risk is market exposure. If a large percentage of customers place bets on the same outcome, the sportsbook may face significant liability if that outcome occurs. Risk teams therefore monitor betting activity, exposure levels, and liability across different events and markets.
Another important aspect is customer behaviour. Risk teams analyse betting patterns to identify sharp bettors, unusual activity, or potential fraud. Understanding who is betting, how they are betting, and whether their behaviour presents additional risk is a critical part of sportsbook operations.
Sportsbook risk also involves making informed decisions based on data. This can include adjusting limits, reviewing exposure, supporting trading decisions, and ensuring the sportsbook remains both competitive and profitable.
Ultimately, I see sportsbook risk as the balance between protecting the business from excessive exposure while continuing to offer an attractive betting experience for customers.
15. Why did you move from Materials Science and Engineering to Business Analytics? - 转专业
I chose to move from Materials Science and Engineering to Business Analytics because, during my engineering studies, I became increasingly interested in data analysis, problem-solving, and decision-making.
Engineering taught me how to think logically, work with quantitative information, and approach problems in a structured way. However, I found myself particularly interested in the analytical side of projects, especially when data was being used to understand patterns, evaluate outcomes, and support decisions.
As I explored different career paths, I realised that I enjoyed working with data and business problems more than traditional engineering topics. Business Analytics offered an opportunity to combine technical skills such as statistics, programming, and data analysis with real-world commercial decision-making.
That decision ultimately led me to roles in business analytics, trading, and sportsbook operations. Looking back, I see it less as a career change and more as a natural progression from solving engineering problems to solving business and risk-management problems using data.
The analytical mindset I developed through engineering continues to help me today, particularly in trading and risk-management environments where structured thinking and quantitative analysis are essential.
16. How do you learn new things? -
I learn new things by combining structured learning with hands-on application.
When I encounter a new topic, I first focus on understanding the fundamentals through documentation, training materials, online courses, or discussions with experienced colleagues. I like to build a strong foundation before moving on to more advanced concepts.
Once I understand the basics, I learn most effectively by applying the knowledge in practice. I believe that real understanding comes from using what you have learned to solve actual problems rather than simply reading about it.
For example, when I moved into cryptocurrency trading at OKX, I had to quickly learn about market structure, derivatives, risk management, and trading strategies. I spent time studying the concepts, but I also reinforced that knowledge through daily market analysis and practical trading experience.
Similarly, when I joined Flutter, I needed to develop a deeper understanding of sportsbook operations, customer betting behaviour, exposure management, and risk monitoring. By combining self-learning with day-to-day experience, I was able to become productive quickly.
Overall, I am naturally curious and enjoy learning. I find that the most effective approach is to understand the theory, apply it in practice, and continuously improve through feedback and experience.
17. What achievement best represents who you are?
One of my biggest achievements was my experience as a Crypto Lead Trader at OKX.
When I first moved into cryptocurrency trading, I had to learn an entirely new market, including spot trading, derivatives, risk management, and market structure. The cryptocurrency market is highly volatile and operates 24/7, which creates a very challenging environment for traders.
Through continuous learning, disciplined risk management, and daily market analysis, I was able to develop and manage trading strategies while maintaining strong risk controls. Over time, I achieved a trading win rate of close to 70% while operating in highly volatile market conditions.
What makes this achievement particularly meaningful to me is not just the performance itself, but the process behind it. It required analytical thinking, discipline, continuous learning, and the ability to make informed decisions under pressure.
I believe the skills I developed through that experience—especially risk management, exposure monitoring, and decision-making in fast-moving environments—are highly relevant to a Sportsbook Risk Trader role and have helped shape the professional I am today.
18. General -
Why are you leaving Flutter? Flutter?
I have enjoyed my time at Flutter and learned a great deal about sportsbook operations and risk management.
However, I am looking for an opportunity to take on broader responsibilities and continue developing my career within sportsbook risk and trading.
Penn Interactive's growth, scale, and focus on innovation make it a very attractive next step for me.
What is a Sharp Bettor?
A sharp bettor is an experienced and knowledgeable customer who consistently makes profitable betting decisions. Sharp bettors often identify value in odds before the market adjusts and are generally considered more informed than average recreational bettors.
What is Exposure?
Exposure refers to the financial risk a sportsbook faces if a particular outcome occurs. It represents the sportsbook's level of vulnerability based on how customers have placed their bets.
Example:
Liverpool Win
90% of all bets
→ High Exposure
What is Liability?
Liability is the actual amount of money a sportsbook would need to pay out if a particular outcome wins. It is the financial obligation associated with a betting outcome.
Example:
Total Bets on Liverpool:
£100,000
Potential Payout:
£180,000
Liability:
£180,000
What's the Difference Between Exposure and Liability?
Exposure and liability are closely related, but they are not the same.
Exposure refers to the overall level of risk a sportsbook faces on a particular outcome.
Liability refers to the specific amount of money the sportsbook may need to pay out if that outcome occurs.

What sports do you follow?
NBA,
I primarily follow basketball, especially the NBA. I enjoy both watching games and analysing team performance, player statistics, and market expectations.
Recently, I have been closely following the 2026 NBA Finals between the New York Knicks and the San Antonio Spurs. It has been particularly interesting to see how public sentiment, team performance, and market expectations evolve throughout the series.
I also follow major football competitions such as the Premier League, but basketball is definitely the sport I follow most closely.
NBA details
Personally, I think the Knicks are slightly favoured by the betting market at the moment, which is understandable given their 2-0 lead in the series. However, I actually like the Spurs' chances more than the market seems to.
I've been a Spurs fan since the Duncan, Parker, and Ginóbili era, and I've really enjoyed watching the current team built around Wembanyama. What impresses me most is that they managed to eliminate a very strong Oklahoma City Thunder team to reach the Finals.
From a sportsbook perspective, what's interesting is that public sentiment and true probability are not always the same thing. Many bettors may focus heavily on the Knicks' series lead, while others may believe the market is underestimating the Spurs' ability to adjust and compete.
That's one reason I find sports betting fascinating—the challenge is not just understanding the sport itself, but understanding how customer sentiment, betting activity, and market expectations interact.
the Premier League details
For football, I support Arsenal F.C.. Since moving to London, I've had the opportunity to experience the football culture here firsthand. One particularly memorable experience was attending the Arsenal celebration parade, which gave me a much deeper appreciation for the connection between clubs, supporters, and sporting events.
Do you bet yourself?
Yes, occasionally and responsibly.
I view betting primarily as a way to better understand sportsbook products, customer behaviour, and market dynamics rather than as a source of income.
Having experience from a customer's perspective helps me understand how odds, promotions, and market movements influence betting decisions.
