Treasury Controls, Accuracy & Process Improvement

At BMW China Leasing, I supported finance operations involving more than 20,000 monthly vehicle payment transactions.

During one reporting cycle, I identified discrepancies between transaction records and management reports. Given the importance of reporting accuracy, I used SQL and Excel to trace the data, investigate the root cause, and validate the information across different datasets.

After identifying the issue, I worked with relevant teams to improve the reporting logic and introduced additional validation checks to strengthen reporting controls.

As a result, reporting accuracy improved and the risk of similar issues occurring in the future was reduced.

This experience taught me the importance of accuracy, reconciliation, operational controls, and continuous process improvement when working with financial data.

Story 2 — Mercedes-Benz
Communication, Judgement & Bringing Solutions

At Mercedes-Benz, I supported an EV charging project involving internal teams and international suppliers.

Different stakeholders often had different priorities regarding project timelines, deliverables, and resource allocation.

Rather than simply escalating issues, I focused on understanding the concerns of each stakeholder, identifying practical solutions, and facilitating communication between teams.

I organised meetings, documented requirements and risks, and ensured project progress was tracked transparently.

Through better communication and alignment, the project continued smoothly and stakeholders remained focused on the same objectives.

This experience strengthened my communication skills, stakeholder management abilities, and taught me the importance of bringing solutions rather than simply raising problems.

Story 3 — Flutter
Prioritisation, Reporting & Working in a Fast-Paced Environment

At Flutter, I worked as a Sports Trading Analyst in a fast-paced operational environment.

During major sporting events, transaction volumes increased significantly while multiple reports needed to be delivered within strict deadlines.

To manage competing priorities, I assessed tasks based on business impact and urgency, automated repetitive reporting activities where possible, and maintained regular communication with stakeholders.

Despite the pace of the environment, I consistently ensured reporting accuracy and supported ongoing operational monitoring.

This experience strengthened my ability to prioritise effectively, analyse operational data, and deliver accurate reporting while managing multiple responsibilities.

Drive Process & System Optimization: Support treasury systems and spearhead process enhancements to continuously improve transactional efficiency and operational workflow.

Manage Data & Reconciliation: Assist in the consolidated tracking, data aggregation, and regular reconciliation of group-wide treasury operations.

Maintain Compliance & Documentation: Author and continuously update Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), operational manuals, and internal risk control guidelines.

1. Tell me about yourself

My name is Chenyu Wang, and you can also call me Krist. I graduated last year from Trinity College Dublin with a First Class Honours MSc in Business Analytics.

Before coming to Trinity, I completed my undergraduate degree in Materials Science and Engineering at China University of Mining and Technology, Beijing, while also taking courses related to Computer Science. During my undergraduate studies, I was awarded a full scholarship to participate in an exchange programme at University College Cork, where I studied subjects related to physics, chemistry, and computer science.

That experience was actually my first introduction to Ireland, and I really enjoyed the culture, the international environment, and the way people worked and collaborated. It played a significant role in my decision to return to Ireland and pursue my master's degree at Trinity.

During my master's, I worked on a variety of projects involving data analysis and business decision-making, which helped me develop strong analytical and problem-solving skills. I was also involved in the Trinity Student Managed Fund as an Analyst, where I participated in investment research and market analysis. Through that experience, I developed a stronger understanding of financial risk and data-driven decision-making, which further strengthened my interest in finance.

What really sparked my interest in Treasury, however, was my experience at BMW China Leasing. As a Business Analyst, I supported finance operations involving more than 20,000 monthly vehicle payment transactions. My responsibilities included transaction monitoring, reconciliation support, reporting analysis, payment data validation, and SOP documentation.

Working with large volumes of sensitive financial data taught me the importance of attention to detail, compliance, and process discipline. I was regularly involved in payment record management, reconciliation activities, reporting controls, and process documentation. I also participated in several automation and process improvement initiatives aimed at improving reporting quality and operational efficiency.

After that, I joined Mercedes-Benz as a Technical Project Manager, based in Beijing. I supported EV charging-related projects and worked closely with both internal stakeholders and domestic and international suppliers. My responsibilities included stakeholder coordination, project documentation, governance support, and project tracking.

Most recently, I worked at Flutter as a Sports Trading Analyst. Flutter is one of the world's largest sports betting and gaming companies, operating in a highly regulated environment where compliance, risk management, and operational controls are extremely important.

My role focused on operational data analysis, risk monitoring, and reporting development. A key part of my work was ensuring the accuracy and consistency of operational data, identifying unusual activities, and providing timely insights to support business decisions.

Because of the highly regulated nature of the industry, I also developed a strong appreciation for compliance requirements, control frameworks, and the importance of maintaining accuracy when working with large volumes of data.

This experience further strengthened my analytical skills, risk awareness, attention to detail, and ability to maintain accuracy while working in a fast-paced environment.

Looking back, a common theme across all of my experiences has been finance operations, risk management, process improvement, compliance, and data-driven decision-making. Many of these skills are highly relevant to Treasury, particularly in areas such as payments, cash operations, reconciliation, internal controls, and process optimisation.

That's one of the reasons I'm so excited about this opportunity with JD. I see Treasury as a career where I can combine my experience in finance operations, risk awareness, and data analysis while continuing to learn, contribute, and grow professionally over the long term.

2. Why JD? / Why do you want to work for us?

There are three main reasons why I am interested in JD and this opportunity.

First, JD is going through an exciting phase of international expansion. As someone who has studied and worked in both China and Ireland, I am particularly attracted to organisations that operate across different markets and cultures. I believe JD's global growth strategy will create many opportunities to learn, take ownership, and make an impact.

Second, I am especially interested in Treasury because it sits at the intersection of finance, operations, risk management, and business decision-making. Treasury is not only about managing payments and cash flows; it is also about ensuring that the business operates efficiently and sustainably. I find that combination of operational responsibility and strategic importance very appealing.

Finally, I believe my previous experiences have prepared me well for this role. At BMW, I worked with payment-related processes, reconciliation activities, reporting controls, and process improvement initiatives. At Mercedes-Benz, I gained experience coordinating stakeholders and supporting governance processes. At Flutter, I worked with large volumes of operational data, risk monitoring, and reporting accuracy. Across all of these roles, I developed strong attention to detail, analytical thinking, and a process-improvement mindset, which I believe are highly relevant to Treasury.

What excites me most about JD is that this role offers the opportunity to build a strong Treasury foundation while working in a fast-growing global organisation. I see it not only as my next job, but as a place where I can develop a long-term career and continue growing professionally.

3. Why Treasury? / Why this role?

My interest in Treasury really started during my time at BMW China Leasing.

As part of the finance operations team, I worked closely with payment-related data, reconciliation activities, reporting controls, and operational processes involving more than 20,000 monthly vehicle payment transactions.

Through that experience, I became interested in understanding how organisations manage financial resources, maintain accurate payment processes, and ensure strong operational controls.

What attracts me to Treasury is that it sits at the intersection of finance, operations, risk management, and problem-solving. It is a function that directly supports the day-to-day running of a business while also contributing to broader financial decision-making.

I also feel that many of the skills I have developed are highly relevant to Treasury. At BMW, I worked with reconciliation and payment monitoring. At Mercedes-Benz, I was involved in process management and documentation. At Flutter, I worked with operational data and risk monitoring in a fast-paced environment.

Looking at the JD role specifically, I was excited to see responsibilities such as payment operations, reconciliation, process optimisation, and compliance. These are all areas that I have already had exposure to and genuinely enjoy working on.

I see Treasury as a long-term career path where I can continue developing both my finance knowledge and analytical skills while contributing to the success of the business.

4. Describe a team conflict and how you resolved it

One example was during my internship at Mercedes-Benz, where I was supporting a smart charging project involving both internal teams and external suppliers.

At one stage of the project, there was a disagreement regarding the project timeline. The engineering team wanted additional testing before moving forward, while the business side was pushing for faster delivery to meet project deadlines.

As a result, communication became difficult because both sides were focused on different priorities.

My role was not to make the final decision, but I helped facilitate communication between the teams. I organised meetings, documented key concerns from both sides, and ensured that everyone had visibility of the project status and potential risks.

Through these discussions, we agreed on a revised timeline that allowed critical testing to be completed while still meeting the most important business milestones.

The project continued smoothly afterwards, and the experience taught me the importance of listening to different perspectives, maintaining clear communication, and focusing on finding solutions rather than assigning blame.

I believe these skills are especially important in Treasury, where collaboration across teams is often required to ensure accurate and timely execution of processes.

5. Where do you see yourself in five years?

In the short term, my goal is to build a strong foundation in Treasury by learning the core areas of the function, including payment operations, cash management, reconciliation processes, banking operations, and risk controls.

As someone coming from a business analytics background, I also want to understand how treasury operates within a global organisation and learn from experienced colleagues in the team.

In the medium term, I would like to take on more responsibility, become more involved in process improvement initiatives, and contribute to projects related to operational efficiency, treasury reporting, and risk management.

Given my analytical background, I would also like to use data and technology to help improve treasury processes and decision-making.

In the long term, I hope to become a well-rounded finance professional who combines strong treasury expertise with analytical and problem-solving skills. Rather than focusing on a specific title, I want to become someone who is trusted to manage important financial operations, support business decisions, and create value for the organisation.

One of the reasons I am attracted to JD is that it is a global and fast-growing organisation, which I believe would provide the right environment for me to continuously learn, grow, and develop my career over the long term.

6. Tell me about a time you worked in a team

One example was during my internship at BMW China Leasing, where I worked on the implementation of an AI-powered CRM platform.

The project involved multiple stakeholders, including the finance team, developers, customer service teams, and external vendors.

My role was to gather business requirements, support communication between technical and non-technical teams, and help ensure that business needs were accurately translated into system requirements.

Because different teams had different priorities and perspectives, clear communication was very important. I regularly participated in meetings, documented requirements, tracked progress through Jira, and followed up on outstanding issues to keep everyone aligned.

Through close collaboration across the different teams, the project was successfully implemented and improved operational visibility and customer enquiry resolution efficiency.

This experience taught me the importance of teamwork, stakeholder management, and maintaining clear communication when working on complex projects. I believe these skills are highly relevant to Treasury, where collaboration across multiple functions is often required to ensure smooth operations.

Earlier in my career, I sometimes spent too much time perfecting details before sharing my work.

While attention to detail is important, I learned that timely communication and feedback are equally important.

Now I actively share progress updates and seek feedback earlier, which helps me work more efficiently while maintaining quality.

8. Tell me about a time you showed leadership

During my Mercedes-Benz internship, I took initiative in coordinating communication between different project stakeholders.

Although I was not the formal project leader, I organised meetings, tracked project risks, and ensured action items were followed up.

This helped improve project visibility and contributed to more efficient collaboration across teams.

9. Tell me about a difficult problem you solved

One difficult problem I faced was during my internship at BMW China Leasing, where I was supporting finance operations involving a large volume of payment transaction data.

During one reporting cycle, I noticed inconsistencies between transaction records and the figures appearing in management reports. Because the reports were used by multiple stakeholders, including finance teams, accuracy was extremely important.

My task was to identify the source of the discrepancy and ensure the reports could be delivered on time.

To investigate the issue, I used SQL and Excel to trace the transaction data through different stages of the reporting process. After reviewing the data flows and validation logic, I discovered that some records were being mapped incorrectly during the reporting workflow, which was affecting the final output.

I worked with the relevant teams to verify the issue, update the reporting logic, and perform additional validation checks before the reports were released.

As a result, reporting accuracy improved significantly, and we also introduced additional controls to reduce the risk of similar issues occurring in the future.

This experience taught me the importance of attention to detail, structured problem-solving, and validating data before making business decisions.

Early in one project, I underestimated the amount of stakeholder communication required.

As a result, some expectations were not aligned initially, causing delays.

I learned the importance of proactive communication and regular progress updates.

Since then, I have focused much more on stakeholder management and expectation setting.

11. Tell me about a time you worked under pressure

One example was during my time at Flutter, where I worked as a Sports Trading Analyst.

In that role, we regularly dealt with large volumes of operational and trading data, especially during major sporting events when transaction volumes increased significantly and reporting deadlines were very tight.

During one particularly busy period, multiple reports needed to be delivered within a short timeframe while we were also monitoring live operational risks and responding to unexpected issues.

To manage the pressure, I first prioritised tasks based on business impact and urgency. I focused on the most critical reports, automated some repetitive reporting processes where possible, and maintained clear communication with stakeholders so they were aware of progress and any potential risks.

By staying organised and focusing on priorities, I was able to ensure that all reports were delivered accurately and on time, while also supporting ongoing operational monitoring.

This experience taught me the importance of remaining calm under pressure, managing priorities effectively, and maintaining accuracy even when working with large volumes of time-sensitive data.

12. Tell me about a time you used data to make a decision

One example was during my time at BMW China Leasing, where I worked with large volumes of payment transaction and operational data.

I noticed that part of the reporting process relied heavily on manual data extraction and validation, which was time-consuming and increased the risk of human error.

To better understand the issue, I analysed the workflow and reviewed the time spent on different reporting activities. The data showed that a significant amount of effort was being spent on repetitive validation tasks rather than actual analysis.

Based on these findings, I suggested introducing a more automated reporting and validation process using SQL-based data extraction and standardised reporting templates.

By reducing manual intervention and improving data consistency, the reporting process became more efficient and reliable, allowing the team to focus more on analysing exceptions and business issues rather than repetitive processing.

This experience taught me that data should not only be used to identify problems but also to support process improvement and operational efficiency.

13. Tell me about a time you managed multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment

One example was during my time at Flutter as a Sports Trading Analyst.

The environment was extremely fast-paced, especially during major sporting events when transaction volumes increased significantly and multiple teams relied on timely operational reporting.

On a typical busy day, I was responsible for monitoring operational data, supporting risk-related activities, responding to ad-hoc requests from stakeholders, and delivering several reports within strict deadlines.

To manage these competing priorities, I first assessed which tasks had the greatest business impact and urgency. I organised my workload accordingly, automated repetitive reporting tasks where possible, and maintained regular communication with stakeholders to keep them updated on progress.

By staying organised and focusing on priorities, I was able to deliver reports accurately and on time while continuing to support operational monitoring and risk management activities.

This experience taught me how to remain effective in a fast-paced environment, balance multiple responsibilities, and maintain attention to detail even when working under tight deadlines.

*** 15. What is your understanding of Treasury? ***

From my understanding, Treasury is responsible for ensuring that a company has the financial resources, controls, and processes needed to support both its day-to-day operations and long-term growth.

At a high level, Treasury typically covers four key areas.

The first is Cash Management, which focuses on understanding where the company's cash is, how much is available, and ensuring funds are available when and where they are needed.

The second is Payments Management, which ensures that transactions are executed accurately, securely, and on time while maintaining appropriate controls and approvals.

The third is Liquidity Management, which is the area I find particularly interesting. Treasury teams need to understand future cash inflows and outflows, forecast funding requirements, and ensure that the business has sufficient liquidity to meet its obligations. A company can be profitable on paper, but if cash is not available at the right time, it can still face operational challenges. For a global company like JD, where funds are spread across different countries, currencies, and banking relationships, effective liquidity management becomes even more critical.

The fourth is Risk Management, which involves identifying and managing financial risks such as foreign exchange risk, interest rate risk, and liquidity risk.

However, after speaking with Angie and learning more about the team, I realised that Treasury is much more than managing cash and payments. It is also about building reliable processes, maintaining strong controls, supporting business decisions, and continuously improving operational efficiency.

What particularly attracts me to Treasury is that it combines finance, operations, risk management, data analysis, and problem-solving. It requires attention to detail, sound judgement, strong communication skills, and the ability to identify issues while also proposing practical solutions.

I also appreciate that Treasury is a function where continuous learning and ownership are very important. Initially, the focus is on understanding processes and controls, but over time, you are expected to develop your own understanding of the business, identify opportunities for improvement, and become capable of independently analysing information and making recommendations.

That combination of operational responsibility, analytical thinking, and continuous improvement is one of the main reasons why I see Treasury as a long-term career path.

从职能角度来看，Treasury主要包括四个方面。

第三是流动性管理（Liquidity Management），这也是我个人特别感兴趣的部分。Treasury团队需要持续预测未来的资金流入和流出情况，提前规划资金需求，并确保企业始终拥有足够的流动性支持业务发展。一家公司即使账面盈利，如果在关键时点缺少现金，依然可能面临运营风险。对于像JD这样拥有全球业务布局的企业来说，资金分布在不同国家、不同币种以及不同银行体系中，因此如何高效调配资金、保障流动性就显得尤为重要。

第四是风险管理（Risk Management），包括汇率风险、利率风险以及流动性风险等财务风险的识别和管理。

不过，通过和Angie的交流，我发现Treasury不仅仅是管理资金和付款流程。它本质上也是一个通过流程、控制和数据支持企业运营和商业决策的重要职能。

我特别认同团队提到的一些要求，例如准确性优先于速度、具备清晰判断能力、能够主动分析问题并提出解决方案，而不仅仅是发现问题。我觉得这些能力其实与优秀Treasury人员的核心素质高度一致。

同时，我认为Treasury也是一个需要持续学习和不断成长的岗位。从最初理解流程和控制体系，到逐渐形成自己的业务理解，再到主动发现优化机会、独立完成分析和报告，这种成长路径让我觉得非常有吸引力。

正是这种结合了财务、运营、风险管理、数据分析以及持续改进的特点，让我认为Treasury是一个非常适合我长期发展的职业方向。

*** 16. Why did you move from Materials Science and Engineering to Business Analytics? ***

I would actually say the transition happened gradually rather than being a sudden decision.

During my undergraduate studies, I was awarded a full scholarship to participate in an exchange programme at University College Cork in Ireland.

While I continued studying engineering-related subjects, I was also exposed to courses involving computing, data analysis, and quantitative problem-solving.

What really stood out to me was that many of the projects focused not only on technical concepts but also on how data could be used to understand problems, support decision-making, and improve real-world outcomes.

At the same time, being in an international environment allowed me to interact with students from different academic and professional backgrounds. I found myself increasingly interested in discussions around business, finance, technology, and how data could be used to solve practical problems.

Compared with purely technical research, I realised that I particularly enjoyed analysing data, identifying patterns, and understanding how decisions could improve business performance.

Later, during my internships at BMW and in subsequent roles, I found that the parts of the job I enjoyed most were related to data analysis, process improvement, operational efficiency, and supporting decision-making.

As a result, pursuing a master's degree in Business Analytics felt like a natural next step. I didn't see it as moving away from engineering. Instead, I saw it as applying the analytical mindset I had developed through engineering to business and finance challenges.

Looking back, I believe engineering gave me structured thinking and problem-solving skills, while Business Analytics taught me how to apply those skills in a commercial environment. Together, they have shaped the way I approach finance, operations, and ultimately my interest in Treasury today.

本科期间，我获得了全额奖学金到爱尔兰科克大学交换学习。在科克大学期间，我除了继续学习材料相关课程之外，也接触了一些计算机和数据分析相关课程。

当时给我印象很深的是，很多课程不仅关注技术本身，更强调如何利用数据去理解问题、支持决策以及优化实际业务场景。

与此同时，由于身处一个国际化的学习环境，我接触到了来自不同国家和不同专业背景的同学。很多人都在讨论商业、金融、数据以及科技如何结合去解决现实问题。

相比单纯研究材料本身，我发现自己越来越享受分析数据、寻找规律以及解决实际业务问题的过程。

后来回国实习时，无论是在BMW还是之后的工作经历中，我都发现自己最感兴趣的部分其实是：

而不仅仅是技术研发本身。

所以在申请硕士的时候，我并没有觉得自己是在放弃工程，而是希望把工程培养出来的分析能力应用到商业场景中。

因此我选择了Business Analytics。

回过头来看，我觉得材料工程培养了我的逻辑思维和问题解决能力，而Business Analytics则让我学会如何把这些能力应用到商业和金融场景中。

所以对我来说，这更像是一次自然的发展，而不是一次完全的转行。

*** 17. How do you learn new things? ***

One example was when I joined BMW China Leasing as a Business Analyst.

Although I had a technical and analytical background, I had very limited exposure to finance operations, payment processes, and reconciliation activities at that time.

To get up to speed quickly, I first spent time understanding the end-to-end payment workflow, reviewing SOPs, and learning from colleagues across different teams.

At the same time, I actively documented key processes, asked targeted questions, and used real transaction data to understand how the process worked in practice.

Within a relatively short period of time, I was able to support reporting, reconciliation, and payment validation activities independently.

This experience taught me that when learning something new, I like to combine structured learning, hands-on practice, and asking questions to build understanding as quickly as possible.

当时虽然我有数据分析背景，但对于财务运营、支付流程以及对账工作其实并不熟悉。
